Summer At Cooper Lake: A Hopkins County Local's Guide To The South Sulphur Unit
If you have lived in Hopkins County for more than a season, you already know the park is there. What changes year to year is which parts of it are actually usable. Summer 2026 is one of those years where the map on the sign and the map in real life do not match, and knowing the difference is the whole game.
Cooper Lake sits along the Sulphur River between Delta and Hopkins counties, and the South Sulphur Unit is the one closer to home. It is on 2,560 acres on the southern shore, opened in 1996 under a long lease between Texas Parks and Wildlife and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Two things are worth pinning down before you plan a weekend around it.
First, the Honey Creek boat ramp at the South Sulphur unit has been closed since September 2025 due to low lake levels, while the boat ramps at Gulls Bluff, the Tira Satellite ramp, and Doctors Creek at Lone Pine remain open. If your habit is to launch at Honey Creek, that habit is on pause. Gulls Bluff is the working alternative on this side of the lake.
Second, the Sunset Cove Day-use Area is closed through late spring 2026, with construction underway on a replacement fishing pier and other upgrades. The Sunset Cove and Eagle Point piers are also closed due to flood damage. That leaves the shore-fishing crowd working from the bank and from the ramps that stayed open, which is fine if you plan for it and frustrating if you drive out expecting the pier.
Practical rule for the summer: call the park at 903-945-5256 the morning of, and if it has rained in the last day, check the Texas Department of Transportation before you leave, because State Highway 71 often closes when it rains.
The park has two units. Doctors Creek sits on the north shore in Delta County. South Sulphur sits on the Hopkins County side and is the one worth learning cold if you live around Sulphur Springs, Como, Cumby, or Brashear.
The distinction matters for two reasons.
The equestrian trail is here. Horses are welcome at the South Sulphur Unit, which has a dedicated 10.5-mile equestrian trail and specialized equestrian campsites, and you must bring proof of a negative Coggins test for your horse. If you keep animals on a place outside town, that trail is the closest legitimate ride you have without loading the trailer for a longer drive.
The swim beach is here too. The swim area at South Sulphur includes a sandy beach, which the Doctors Creek side does not have on the same terms. For a family cooling off after work in July, that beach is the answer.
A few small facts that repay knowing:
The tackle loaner detail is the one most residents overlook. If a grandkid is in town for the weekend and the rods are buried in a shed, you can walk in empty-handed and leave with a rig.
The park is not just a lake with a fence around it. By day you can hike, swim, and fish, and by night you can listen for owls and stargaze away from the city, with ranger-led interpretive events on nature, science, and the park itself. For families with kids who have burned through the usual summer routine, the Junior Ranger program lets you pick up a free activity journal at headquarters, earn a badge by completing tasks, and borrow a Junior Ranger Explorer Pack with tools for the park.
The interpretive schedule shifts month to month. It is worth calling ahead rather than counting on a specific program being on the calendar the weekend you show up.
Here is where local knowledge pays. A South Sulphur day on its own is a fine Saturday. Chained to what happens back in town after 6 p.m., it becomes a better one.
Late afternoon at the park. The heat breaks a little, the beach thins out, and the light on the water is the reason people take pictures they never end up posting. Pack up around 5:30.
Downtown by 6. Celebration Market runs at Celebration Plaza from May 16, 2026 through September 19, 2026, on Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., featuring locally grown produce, homemade arts and crafts, homemade goodies, and entertainment. Children have the splash pad, bubbles, balloons, and hands-on activities. If you have been in Hopkins County long enough, you already know half the vendors by first name. If you are newer, this is the fastest way to fix that.
Dinner on Main. The downtown restaurant list is deeper than newcomers expect. A few to know by address rather than by rumor:
If you are used to driving to Rockwall or Greenville for a rooftop, the fact that Eighty-Four sits at 109 N Davis with a rooftop bar is a thing to sit with. That is not usually part of the small-town summer picture.
If your Saturday plan blows up, the day-use side is bigger than the boat ramps. The day-use areas have picnic tables, playgrounds, and volleyball courts, and South Sulphur has a basketball court. Picnic tables sit above the lake, some are covered, and all have grills. Pack the cooler and skip the launch entirely if the wind is up.
For campers already booked, the count is worth knowing in advance. The park has 136 pet-friendly campsites split between Doctors Creek and South Sulphur, 121 with electricity and water, and amenities include hot showers, restrooms, and a dump station, with each site outside the tent walk-in category getting a concrete pad, picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post.
The geography sitting behind all of this is one of the things that makes this park read differently from other Northeast Texas lakes. The park sits at the intersection of the Tallgrass Prairie and Post Oak Savannah, creating habitats you do not get from a single-ecosystem park. For anyone who has lived on the county's mix of open pasture and post oak fencelines, the transition inside the park mirrors what you drive past on the way there.
The heaviest use is Saturday. If you can shift a visit to a Tuesday evening in July, the pavilions are empty, the bank fishing is available without a license, and the ranger crew is more likely to have time to talk. July average highs run around 94 degrees Fahrenheit, so a 7 p.m. arrival stretches the usable window into cooler air. Quiet hours do not start until 10 p.m., which gives you three hours of low-crowd park to work with.
That is the part most residents underuse. The park is not a destination that has to be earned on a weekend. It is a fifteen-minute drive from town for anyone on the west side of the county, and closer than that for the folks on the FM roads that feed into it.
